Chess Set

This project features a full set of pure titanium chess pieces that I designed, prototyped, programmed (in CAM), and machined on a CNC lathe. It also includes a custom chess board made from walnut and maple, with my branded initials in the corner. The chess pieces are stored in a custom wooden case with a lasered foam insert to perfectly fit each piece.

This was a passion project that I started and completed in about 11 days right after my graduation. It was a bit of a final farewell to the wonderful Cal Poly machine shops. Scroll through the pictures below to follow my manufacturing timeline.

Day 0 – June 10, 2024

I started with the 3D printed prototypes before my June 16th graduation so that I had some time to get all the little tweaks in and find designs that I loved.

Day 1-2 – June 18-19, 2024

I spent these days learning how to do CAM! Luckily, these pieces aren't too technically difficult, but there were a few details I had to figure out before turning out the first part.

Day 3 – June 20, 2024

This day is whe I learned how to use the CNC lathe. A friend of mine was generous to spend a few hours running through all of the operations, carefully teaching me everything I needed to know while I watched over his shoulder. I had my first king piece at the end of Day 3.

Day 4 – June 21, 2024

I started on the chess board while other people used the lathe. I got the first glue-up done and came back after it had dried to flatten it out with the drum sander.

Day 5 – June 22, 2024

I made awesome progress this day and finished the day off with 1 more king, 2 queens, 4 bishops, and 4 knights. The queens, bishops, and knights all had to be finished in the mill, but that will happen later. I also did all of the lathe work by myself on this day with my friend there to help if something didn't sound quite right.

Day 6 – June 23, 2024

More progress was made on the lathe with the completion of the 4 rooks and 2 pawns. I also cut the next set of strips for the chess board and did the second glue-up for that. By this point, I had also gotten very good at truing the 4-jaw-chuck jaws around each new piece.

Day 7 – June 24, 2024

I spent about 12 hours in the shop on Day 7 cranking out the rest of the 14 pawns and gluing up the border of the chess board. I also had just enough extra stock to make 2 more queens to complete the set. It was a long and awesome day.

Day 8 June 25, 2024

With all of first lathe operations finally done, I spent the morning of Day 8 grinding off all of the little nubs left by the parting tool on the bottom of each piece. This was a long but cool process that consumed a lot of sanding pads.

I also got to work finishing the queens and bishops in the mill using custom 3D printed soft jaw inserts to hold the pieces.

Day 9 – June 26, 2024

I tackled the milling of the knights on Day 9. I used the rotary vise in the manual mill and rotated the vise around enough so that it left the piece looking like the head of a horse. I ended up narrowing the nose a little more than originally planned – partially because it looked better and partially because I cut too much on the first knight to achieve the intended shape.

Day 10 – June 27, 2024

I did the last lathe operations on Day 10 where I cut the bases off of the knights. I kept these on so that they could be gripped in the rotary vise, and now they were ready to get chopped off. I was careful to ensure the knights were true to center along the entire length, then I ran a parting tool operation to cut the base off.

Then, since all of the machining was completed, I got to anodize half of the pieces to make the set have two distinct colors. I individually cleaned each piece with acetone and placed it into a baking soda / de-ionized water solution that had a negative lead sitting in it. I touched the positive lead to the part in the solution and within seconds, it was anodized.

Day 11 – June 28, 2024

Day 11 was a day of finishing touches. I designed and cut out the foam insert that now safely holds each piece. I also sanded and waxed the chess board and started on the box that the foam sits in.

Day 12 – July 11, 2024

I took a bit of a break from the project while I moved from San Luis Obispo back up to Seattle, but then I finally finished gluing up the chess piece box.

Then it was done and time to play some chess!
